Click to openFour measurements of the strap, and only the first is required; the fifth, L, belongs to the watch and is needed only for the fit calculation. The letters on the drawings below are the letters on the plate in the header and in every piece's specification.
Lay the rule on the 10 mark rather than on the zero edge, and subtract 10: the zero edge of most rules is worn, and that is a repeatable millimetre of error. A caliper is safer.
Legend
01
Width of the strap where it meets the case. This is the only measurement required every time. Measure between the lugs — not across the case, and not along the old strap if it has stretched or was never the right one.
Exception: cases with an integrated fitting — Royal Oak, Nautilus, Jorg Hysek and the like. There the width A is not enough: the strap end is shaped to that particular case. Send us the model before ordering and we will check it.
02
Width of the narrow end the buckle attaches to. Needed only if you are moving your own buckle across or taking a clasp from this catalog: it has to match B, not A.
03
Measure the wrist — on the arm, not over a strap. Then: C + D + L, where L comes from Fig. 1. That is the full length of the assembled strap. Leather closes on its own centre line, so the loop is longer than the circumference — on a 2.2 mm strap that is another 7 mm. What is left runs past the buckle as the tail, and the tail is what the holes adjust: 7 of them at 7 mm on a usual strap, and a tail wants to land between 28 and 78 mm — under that it does not reach the keeper, over it the tip runs into the other lug.
Set three measurements: A between the lugs, your wrist circumference and the watch's L — tip of one lug to tip of the other. The tool works out the range of C + D lengths those measurements ask for, and opens the catalog filtered to it.
Fig. 3 — assembled
Leather — the same C + D sum as below; hatching is the tail past the buckle, the blue hole is where the tang sits.
On the diagram: the pair your measurements ask for — not a piece from the catalog — with a 46 mm tail. The loop is 7 mm longer than the circumference: leather closes on its own centre line, not on the arm.
pair required, calculated: C 74 / D 110
The buckle is not in the sum: the tang sits on the same axis as the lug end of C, so the frame adds nothing. An unusual closure — a double deployant, or one with micro-adjustment on the clasp itself — is a different calculation again: write to us.
The same A as in Fig. 1: between the case lugs, not along the old strap. The marks on the scale are the widths that have whole straps with lengths behind them.
A thread around the wrist, without pulling. Measure over the bone, where you wear the watch.
Measure on the arm, not over a strap — we add the thickness ourselves.
The same L as in Fig. 1: from the tip of the upper lug to the tip of the lower one, along the strap. This is not the case diameter — on a classic lugged case L runs about 7 mm past it.
Your C + D range
167–208mm
optimum 184 mm — the pair to cut if you are cutting one; calculated for 2.2 mm of hide, and every extra millimetre of thickness adds 3 mm
Full length C + D + L
231mm
assembled strap on a head with L 47 mm; on your hole the tail comes to 46 mm
Straps in your size
By your measurements the C + D sum wants to be between 167 and 208 mm, with 184 the optimum. That is the span over which the strap can be fastened on a hole at all.
Sizes only. How a particular strap then sits depends on its thickness and on where its holes were punched — both are stated on the product sheet.
